Reforms have been taken up in the state for the viability and the growth of the power sector to meet the needs of the consumers and to promote the overall economy. APSEB formed in 1959 has been restructured into two functionally distinct corporations namely APGENCO and APTRANSCO. Distribution business was segregated from APTRANSCO by the formation of four other distribution companies with effect from 1st March, 2000.

The State's power supply network which consists of 25,719 Ckms of EHT lines, 207432 Ckms of HT lines, 437610 Ckms of transmission lines and 2645 substations is one of the largest networks in the country supplying power to nearly 1,69,25,194 consumers. It is programmed to add 4X400 KV, 5X220 KV, 20X132KV sub stations and 809 CKM of 220 KV lines and 395CKM of 132 KV lines. Another 279 number of 33/11 KV substations are being added.

The power generation available for use is 25,482 million units and the Per Capita Consumption is 575 KWh. There are 4,36,551 distribution transformers and 2,874 sub stations in the State. Dedicated feeders are being provided to 213 HT LI schemes. 998 Special Industrial Express Feeders have been separated to ensure uninterrupted supply to industries.
